Legal, Sale & Breeding Context
Owls in the UK are protected under wildlife legislation, even when they are captive-bred.
Breeding, selling, transferring, or using owls for display or education comes with specific legal responsibilities, including correct ringing or microchipping, accurate record-keeping, and compliance with current licensing and welfare requirements.
Not all owls offered for sale are legally or ethically bred, and purchasing an owl without understanding the law can place both the bird and the keeper at risk.
This course does not encourage the purchase, breeding, or keeping of owls. Its purpose is to promote informed, welfare-first interactions and to reduce harm where owls are already being kept. Understanding the legal and ethical framework is essential before learning how to interact with an owl responsibly.
Legal & Ethical Responsibility
Owls must be legally bred and correctly ringed or microchipped.
Accurate records must be kept.
Transfer, sale, or public use must comply with current legislation.
